Biography
David Lee Jordan is a former American politician and Democratic member of the Mississippi State Senate, representing District 24 from 1993 until his retirement in June 2025. Born to sharecropper parents in Greenwood, Mississippi, during a time of strict segregation, he participated in the Civil Rights Movement and became the first Black member of the Greenwood City Council in 1985, serving 36 years until 2021. A longtime voting rights advocate through the Greenwood Voters League, he championed protections for voting rights, increased funding for historically Black universities, and played a key role in removing the Confederate battle emblem from Mississippi's state flag in 2020. He served on nearly every Senate committee, including as chairman of Enrolled Bills, and was one of Mississippi's longest-serving state senators.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned an undergraduate degree from Delta State University and a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Wyoming; worked 33 years as a science teacher in Mississippi public schools before entering politics.
- Political Experience: Greenwood City Council ; Mississippi State Senate, District 24 , including membership in the Legislative Black Caucus and committees on Agriculture, Finance, Drug Policy, Municipalities, and Veterans and Military Affairs. Resigned mid-term in 2025 at age 92 to care for his wife of 71 years, triggering a special election.
