Biography
David A. Vella is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives representing the 68th district since January 13, 2021. The district includes parts of Cherry Valley, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Rockford, and Roscoe. A lifelong resident of Rockford, he defeated Republican incumbent John Cabello in the 2020 election. Vella lives in Rockford with his wife Michelle and daughter Grace; his son Ryan also resides there. His grandfather, E.J. "Zeke" Giorgi, previously served as a state representative. Notable focuses include workforce development, public safety, economic development, supporting veterans, and empowering women. He serves on committees such as Appropriations–Public Safety, Child Care Access & Early Childhood Education, Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies, Judiciary–Criminal, Police & Fire, Public Utilities, and Veterans' Affairs.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Boylan Catholic High School; earned a B.A. from Augustana College; received a J.D. from Northern Illinois University in 1997.
- Professional Experience: Began career as a public defender in Winnebago County for three years; since 2000, associate at family law firm Vella & Lund, P.C.
- Community Involvement: Former member of the Rockford Literacy Council, focusing on adult programs; former board president of Keith Country Day School, where he helped hire teachers and modernize the curriculum.
