Biography
Dave Sunday - Pennsylvania Attorney General
David Winslow Sunday Jr. was born on June 13, 1975, in Harrisburg and raised in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He is a career prosecutor and member of the Republican Party currently serving as Pennsylvania's Attorney General, a position he has held since 2025. Before becoming Attorney General, Sunday served as the District Attorney of York County from 2018 to 2025.
Sunday is a Navy veteran and previously worked as a UPS driver before pursuing his legal career. He is known for his philosophy of "accountability and redemption" in criminal justice and has made public safety and combating the opioid epidemic central to his work and campaign platform.
Education
Sunday earned his undergraduate degree in Finance from Penn State University. He went on to attend Widener University Commonwealth Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. After law school, he worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Joseph C. Adams of the York County Court of Common Pleas.
Political Experience
Sunday began his prosecution career in 2009 when he joined the York County District Attorney's Office, where he handled cases involving drug crimes and other major offenses. In 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice appointed him as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, where he prosecuted gang, illegal gun, and drug cases. During this time, he led Operation Sunrise, a major prosecution effort that resulted in the conviction of over 100 members and affiliates of the Latin Kings gang operating in York County.
In November 2017, Sunday was elected District Attorney of York County and took office in January 2018. During his tenure as District Attorney, York County experienced significant reductions in crime and its prison population, with the city of York seeing a 36% drop in gun crime from 2022 to 2023. He personally tried approximately 50 felony jury trials to verdict, including successful prosecutions of more than 10 high-profile murder cases.
In July 2023, Sunday announced his candidacy for Pennsylvania Attorney General. He won the Republican primary election by defeating state representative Craig Williams and won the general election in November 2024 against Democratic nominee Eugene DePasquale. He took office as Attorney General in 2025 and continues to work across party lines with Governor Josh Shapiro's administration on matters affecting Pennsylvania citizens.
