Senator Danny Diggs

J.D. "Danny" Diggs is a Republican senator representing Virginia's 24th Senate District, a position he has held since 2024. Born in Hampton, Virginia on July 6, 1957, Diggs is a lifelong Virginian with a distinguished career in law enforcement spanning 45 years.

Diggs represents a district encompassing all of York County, the cities of Poquoson and Williamsburg, part of James City County, and part of Newport News. He is married to Patricia "Patty" Diggs and maintains a Baptist religious affiliation. His hometown is Norfolk, Virginia.

Education

Diggs earned an Associate's Degree from Thomas Nelson Community College and completed coursework in Police Science throughout his career in law enforcement.

Political Experience and Notable Achievements

Diggs began his public service career at age 19 as a Poquoson Police dispatcher and progressed through multiple law enforcement roles, including corrections officer, uniformed police officer, and investigator. Most significantly, he served as Sheriff of York County for 23 years, during which he achieved notable results: despite York County's population growing by 20%, the county's crime rate fell by 25% under his leadership.

As sheriff, Diggs developed a department emphasizing diversity and community engagement, believing that strong leadership brings people together to solve complex problems.

His professional recognition includes the 2003 Outstanding Leadership Award from the Virginia Association of School Resource Officers, the 2013 Community Builder Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Virginia, the 2014 Law and Order Award of Merit from the Military Order of World Wars, and the 2016 Administrator of the Year Award from D.A.R.E Virginia. He also serves as President of the Virginia Sheriff's Association.
