Biography
Daniel Shagoury
Daniel Joseph Shagoury is a Democratic member of the Maine House of Representatives, representing House District 55. Born in 1981 or 1982, he resides in Hallowell, Maine, where he represents Hallowell, Manchester, and West Gardiner in Kennebec County. Shagoury is married and has interests in old cars and amateur history.
Prior to his election to the legislature, Shagoury worked as a legislative aide in the State House for 19 years before retiring and entering electoral politics. Beyond his legislative work, he has been an active community member, serving 13 years on the Board of the Hubbard Free Library, nine years on the SAD 16 School Board as a representative for Hallowell, and eight years on the board of directors for the nonprofit Consumers for Affordable Health Care.
Education
Shagoury earned a B.A. from Colby College and studied foreign affairs at George Washington University.
Political Experience
Shagoury was elected on November 8, 2022 and assumed office on December 7, 2022. He ran against Republican opponent Phillip Wiseman in that initial election. In 2024, he successfully ran for reelection, facing Republican opponent Joe Boyd.
He serves on the Health and Human Services Committee, which oversees matters including the Department of Health and Human Services, MaineCare/Medicaid, children's welfare and mental health services, child care, maternal and infant health, public health, and immunization programs.
Key policy priorities include increasing access to affordable, quality healthcare; increasing the supply of affordable housing; lowering greenhouse gas emissions; and improving benefits for Maine's retirees.
