Biography
Cottie Petrie-Norris is a Democrat representing California's 73rd Assembly District, which includes the cities of Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Tustin in Orange County. A businesswoman, mother of two sons, and community leader, she was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Matthew Harper. Born Catherine Ann Petrie-Norris on August 7, 1975, she grew up in San Diego County in a working-class family, with her stepfather as a union machinist and her mother as a homemaker. Notable achievements include securing millions in funding for Orange County projects, authoring legislation on sea level rise, healthcare access, veteran services, small businesses, fentanyl crisis response, and gun safety at domestic violence incidents, and receiving awards such as “Legislator of the Year” from the California Life Sciences Association, California Family Business Association, and California PACE Association, plus the Sierra Club’s Political Leadership Award.
