Biography

Clay Staires is a Republican representative for Oklahoma House District 66, which includes parts of Osage and Tulsa counties such as Sand Springs, Skiatook, Sperry, and Tulsa . Born in 1964 in Wichita, Kansas, to parents Don and Shirley Staires, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, early in life and was raised in Osage County at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch in Avant. He is a family man, married to Lisa since 1998, with two daughters: Maddy, a graphic designer in Austin, Texas, and Clare, attending the University of Oklahoma. Staires lives in Skiatook and attends Riveted Church. Elected in 2022 to succeed term-limited Rep. Jadine Nollan, he won the Republican primary runoff with 56% and the general election with 70% against Democrat James Rankin, campaigning on support for Donald Trump and opposing "socialist policies"; he was sworn in on November 16, 2022. Notable achievements include running The Leadership Initiative, a business consulting firm aiding nearly 200 small businesses with over $350 million in annual revenue; prior roles as an award-winning teacher, coach, and minister; and operating the non-profit NowGo serving nursing home residents and school children. He serves as Vice Chair of A&B Select Agencies and Administrative Rules, and has advocated for updating aeronautics policy to support industry growth.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from Skiatook High School in 1982 as Senior Class President, Honor Roll student, Student Council member, and lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track; attended the University of Oklahoma, majoring in education, where he played football for Barry Switzer and went to the Fiesta Bowl.
  • Professional Experience: Taught biology and coached track and football at Tulsa Memorial High School, then at Hickman Mills High School in Kansas City ; directed Shepherd’s Fold Ranch ministry for 10 years ; founded The Leadership Initiative in 2012 for business leadership training; ranked #1 Motivational Speaker in Oklahoma, known as "America’s Millionaire Schoolteacher," with 25+ years in coaching, training, and non-profit board development.
  • Political and Community Experience: Served on Avant School Board and Skiatook Chamber of Commerce Board; first elected to Oklahoma House in 2022 as Republican for District 66.
