Biography
Claire Valdez is a Democratic and Working Families Party member representing New York's 37th Assembly District in Queens, including Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth, and Ridgewood. Elected in 2024, she is a union organizer, artist, proud democratic socialist, and dual citizen of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Nation and the United States. A longtime leader in NYC-DSA, she has fought to tax the rich, protect tenants, and empower working people, while advocating for housing for all, free universal healthcare, publicly owned renewable energy, and improved conditions for working-class New Yorkers. She resides in Ridgewood, Queens, and in 2026 announced her candidacy for New York's 7th Congressional District.
Education and Political Experience
- Worked low-wage customer service jobs through high school, college, and beyond.
- At Columbia University, joined UAW Local 2110, served on the bargaining committee, and was elected Unit Chair in 2022, representing 500 coworkers.
- Participated in efforts to democratize the UAW, contributing to the historic Stand Up strike and a new era of labor militancy.
- Led campaigns for taxing the rich and just cause protections for NYC workers.
- Won her Assembly seat with NYC-DSA endorsement, focusing on addressing poverty wages, high rents, ConEd rate hikes, and real estate industry impacts.
