Biography
Representative Chris Welch
Chris Welch is a Democrat representing Illinois House District 7 in Cook County. He serves as Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, the first African American in that role.
Emanuel Christopher "Chris" Welch is an American lawyer and politician. He has represented the 7th District since 2013, covering areas including River Forest, Forest Park, Maywood, Broadview, Bellwood, Hillside, Westchester, La Grange Park, and Berkeley. Elected Speaker on January 13, 2021, succeeding Michael Madigan, Welch has focused on education, job creation, vulnerable populations, and government efficiency. Notable achievements include sponsoring the Illinois Trust Act, cursive writing in schools law, Homeless Bill of Rights, and legislation requiring corporations to disclose board diversity. As Speaker, he imposed term limits on leaders, enhanced disclosures, and supported budgets improving credit ratings and investments in schools and health care. Previously, he chaired a special committee on the ComEd scandal and served on Governor Pritzker's education transition committee.

- Political Experience: Served 12 years on Proviso Township High School District 209 Board of Education , creating the acclaimed Proviso Math and Science Academy and balancing the budget. Ran unsuccessfully for District 7 in 2006; won in 2012. Chaired House Higher Education and Executive Committees, leading on AIM High Scholarship and four-year map grants.
