Chris Van Hollen was born January 10, 1959 in Karachi, Pakistan where his father served as a Foreign Service Officer. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Swarthmore College in 1981 and a master's in public policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1985. Van Hollen served as a legislative assistant for defense and foreign policy to U.S. Senator Charles Mathias, a Maryland Republican from 1985 to 1987. From 1987 to 1993, he was a staff member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and from 1993 to 1994 served as special assistant to the director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.read less
