Biography
Assemblymember Chris Rogers
Chris Rogers is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing District 2, which encompasses the counties of Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, and Trinity. Born September 16, 1987, Rogers is a lifelong resident of Santa Rosa dedicated to Northern California's economic development and environmental sustainability.
Rogers began his career in public service at age 18, inspired by his mother's advocacy work with the Early Learning Institute. He served as senior staff for California State Senator Mike McGuire and worked for other legislators before transitioning to policy advocacy. For nearly five years, he worked as a policy and legislative advocate for Ygrene Energy Fund, a company financing green energy projects.
Political Experience
Rogers was first elected to the Santa Rosa City Council in 2016, representing District 5, and was reelected in 2020. In 2020, at age 33, he was selected by his council colleagues to serve as the city's youngest mayor, a position he held until December 2022. During his tenure as mayor, Rogers led efforts in wildfire recovery, housing affordability, and environmental sustainability, helping the city navigate disaster response and recovery from the 2017 and 2020 fires and the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a city councilmember and mayor, Rogers championed several landmark initiatives including affordable childcare programs, guaranteed income pilots, children's savings accounts, first-time homebuyer assistance, climate resilience improvements, and public transportation investments. He also established a citywide fiscal stabilization fund.
Following Jim Wood's retirement announcement, Rogers ran for the California State Assembly in 2024. He placed second in the primary and defeated Republican Mike Greer in the general election with 65.9% of the vote. He has served in the State Assembly since December 2024, focusing on creating a modern and equitable rural economy, healthcare access, and driving climate action. He is the author of AB 573 .
Education
Rogers holds degrees from UC Santa Barbara and a master's degree in public administration from Sonoma State University, where he developed his passion for policymaking and community engagement.
Rogers is married to Sarah, an emergency room nurse at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa, and is starting a family in the district.
