Biography
Chris Murphy
Chris Murphy is a Republican who represented South Carolina House District 98, which encompasses Dorchester County. He is a lifelong resident of Dorchester County and served 15 years in the South Carolina House of Representatives before resigning, effective January 5, 2026, to spend more time with his family. Murphy and his wife Maite have two sons, Austin and Jackson.
Education
Murphy graduated from the Citadel and pursued a law degree at Mississippi College, where he met his wife.
Political Experience
Murphy has dedicated his entire adult life to public service in Dorchester County. Before his legislative career, he worked as a prosecutor for the First Judicial Circuit, prosecuting violent criminals, and served as a special assistant United States Attorney. He was subsequently elected to Dorchester County Council.
In 2010, Murphy was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. During his tenure, he focused on protecting conservative values, cutting taxes, and improving road infrastructure. He rose to prominence within the legislature, serving as Chairman of the South Carolina House Judiciary Committee, a position that oversaw more than half of the legislation in the State House. He also served as chair of the House Ways and Means subcommittee.
