Biography
Christopher H. "Chris" Mathis is a Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing Legislative District 18 in Tucson.
Chris Mathis is an attorney, professor, and politician living in Tucson with his wife, Colleen, and their dog, Marigold. He teaches health care law as a Professor of Practice at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and maintains a private law practice in Tucson. Appointed to the Arizona House in 2021, he was elected in 2022 and re-elected in 2024 after previously representing District 9. Notable achievements include advocating for water resource preservation, reproductive rights restoration, public school investment, voting rights protection, and common-sense gun safety laws. He serves as the ranking Democratic member on the Natural Resources, Energy and Water Committee and the Ethics Committee, and is a member of the Health and Human Services Committee and Rules Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Master in Public Administration from Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government; Master in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health.
- Political Experience: Practiced law in Illinois; worked in the Illinois General Assembly, U.S. House of Representatives, British Parliament, and as Health Care Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel before moving to Tucson in 2001. Formerly Director of Policy and Communications for the Healthcare Markets and Regulation Lab at Harvard Medical School. Elected to Arizona House since 2021.
