Biography

Chris England is a Democratic member of the Alabama House of Representatives for District 70 , serving as Minority Whip and former chair of the Alabama Democratic Party . Notable achievements include being the first Black chair of either major party in Alabama history and dissenting against discriminatory congressional districts in 2023, which drew national attention.

Christopher John England, born August 19, 1976, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a longtime resident and graduate of Central High School. A Democrat, he represents House District 70 and holds leadership roles such as Minority Whip and caucus chair of the House Democratic Caucus. He previously served as chair of the Alabama Democratic Party from 2019 to 2022, becoming the first Black person to lead either major party in state history. England works as an associate city attorney for Tuscaloosa, handling claims, franchise agreements, tax issues, and state legislation. He serves on committees including Judiciary, Public Safety and Homeland Security, Ethics and Campaign Finance, and Contract Review Oversight. Other roles include vice chair of the Tuscaloosa County Legislative Delegation and boards for Police Athletic League, PRIDE, and others. He is married to Shea Cobb-England, with three children, and they attend Bailey Tabernacle CME Church. His father, John H. England Jr., was a judge and Alabama Supreme Court justice.
