Biography
Chris Carr
Christopher Michael Carr was born on February 8, 1972. He has served as Georgia's 48th Attorney General since 2016, when he was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to fill an unexpired term. Carr is a member of the Republican Party and represents the state of Georgia in this statewide elected position.
Carr is married to Joan and has two children. He resides in Dunwoody, Georgia, and is Roman Catholic.
Political Experience
Before becoming Attorney General, Carr held several significant positions:
- Chief of Staff to U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson : Advised the Senator on federal legislation and judicial nominees for the U.S. Supreme Court and lower federal courts
- Commissioner, Georgia Department of Economic Development : Under his leadership, Georgia was recognized as the top state in the nation for business for each of the three years he served. His tenure facilitated 1,069 projects representing approximately $14.4 billion in investment and the creation of more than 84,000 jobs
As Attorney General, Carr won statewide elections in 2018 and 2022. His tenure has been marked by a conservative record focused on prosecuting violent crime, supporting law enforcement, defending Georgia's election integrity law, going after fraud and corruption, and combating federal overreach.
Notable Achievements
Carr's most significant accomplishments include:
- Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit : Georgia's first-of-its-kind unit that has rescued and assisted over 352 victims and secured numerous convictions for traffickers
- Gang Prosecution Unit : Georgia's first statewide unit that has obtained more than 120 convictions
- Open Government initiatives: Brought the first-ever criminal case under Georgia's open records law and conducted statewide tours educating officials on transparency responsibilities
- Special units targeting organized retail theft, opioid misuse, elder abuse, and consumer fraud
Education
Carr graduated from the Lumpkin School of Law. He began his legal career with Georgia Pacific, then practiced law with Alston & Bird LLP in Atlanta before transitioning to public service roles.
