Biography
Chigozie Onyema is a Democratic Assembly Member representing New Jersey's 28th Legislative District, which spans municipalities in Essex and Union counties. An attorney, community organizer, and activist, he serves as Senior Director at PolicyLink, advancing climate justice, racial wealth inequities, and local economies. Born in Newark and raised in the Maplewood/South Orange community, his commitment to justice stems from educators who inspired systemic change. Notable achievements include “40 Under 40” honors from the National Bar Association and NYU Law Alumni of Color Association, as well as prior roles as Assistant Commissioner at the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs under Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver and staff attorney at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. He focuses on affordable housing, infrastructure, environmental protection, and equitable emerging technologies.
