Biography
Charles Jeffrey Schwertner is a Republican politician and orthopedic surgeon representing Texas Senate District 5 since 2013. A sixth-generation Texan from Georgetown, he is a lifelong conservative, practicing physician, and family man married to Belinda with three adult sons: Carson, Zachary, and Matthew.
Notable achievements include passing SB 3 in 2021 to reform Texas's power grid after winter storms, mandating weatherization of infrastructure and market reforms for reliability; authoring one of the nation's strongest constitutional carry laws; introducing and passing SB 21 in 2025 to create the Texas Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, making Texas the third state with such legislation; expanding mental health access, improving foster care, cutting small business taxes, and protecting seniors.
He served as president pro tempore of the Texas Senate from 2023 to 2025 and currently chairs the Senate Committee on Business & Commerce, overseeing utilities, insurance, banking, technology, and telecom; he also serves on Finance, State Affairs, Economic Development, and the Legislative Budget Board. Previously chaired Health & Human Services and noted as the lone pharmacist in the Texas Legislature; named "Senate Freshman of the Year" by Texas Monthly.
