Biography
Senator Caryn Tyson
Caryn Tyson is a Republican politician and a fifth-generation Kansan from Parker, Kansas. Born on February 15, 1963, she worked in the information technology field for over 24 years before entering the public sphere. Her professional background includes providing space shuttle support for NASA and operating a cattle ranch.
Education
Tyson earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from Kansas State University. She subsequently completed a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the University of Kansas.
Political Experience
Tyson began her legislative service as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives, representing District 4 from 2011 to 2013. In 2013, she succeeded Republican Senator Pat Apple to join the Kansas Senate, where she has represented the 12th District since January 14, 2013. She was re-elected in the general election on November 5, 2024, for a current term ending on January 8, 2029.
During her time in the Kansas Senate, Tyson has served on multiple committees, including Commerce, Transportation, Administrative Rules and Regulations, Information Technology, Legislative Post Audit, and Federal and State Affairs. She has served as the Chair of the Assessment and Taxation Committee.
In 2018, Tyson ran as a Republican candidate for Kansas's 2nd congressional district. In a crowded primary field, she finished second to the eventual general election winner, Steve Watkins. During that campaign, she received endorsements from the Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansans for Life, the Susan B. Anthony List, Maggie's List, and the Madison Project.
