Biography

Senator Carlisle Kennedy

Carlisle Kennedy is a Republican member of the South Carolina State Senate representing District 23, which encompasses Lexington County and portions of Salida County. He was sworn in on December 4, 2024, and his current term extends through November 13, 2028.

Kennedy is 35 years old and resides in Lexington County with his wife, Brooke, and their child. He is a native of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, and describes himself as a devout Christian with a strong commitment to public service and community engagement.

Education

Kennedy's educational background combines business and legal training. He attended Batesburg-Leesville High School before pursuing higher education at Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in corporate finance and a master's degree in business administration. He later graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2019.

During his time at Clemson, Kennedy served as student body president during the 2011-2012 academic year, demonstrating early leadership experience.

Political Experience

Kennedy's entry into electoral politics occurred in 2024 when he challenged long-time incumbent Senator Katrina Shealy in the Republican primary for District 23. Following a competitive runoff, he won the primary and subsequently won the general election unopposed, making him a political newcomer to elected office.

Prior to his Senate service, Kennedy worked as an assistant solicitor in the 11th Judicial Circuit and practiced law with Kennedy Law Firm in Batesburg-Leesville alongside his father. He also previously started a small technology business and worked in wealth management.

In the South Carolina State Senate, Kennedy serves on five key committees: Banking and Insurance; Fish, Game and Forestry; Judiciary, Labor, Commerce and Industry; and Rules. His legislative priorities center on economic development, education reform, and preserving South Carolina's natural resources.
