Biography

Carl E. Heastie is a Democratic Assembly Member representing District 83 in the Northeast Bronx, New York. Born on September 25, 1967, in the Bronx, he has served in the New York State Assembly since 2001 and was elected as the 100th Speaker in 2015, becoming the first African-American to lead the 150-member body. Notable achievements include authoring the 2010 Wage Theft Prevention Act, leading efforts to raise the state's minimum wage to $15 per hour, implementing President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper program as the first state to do so, raising the age of criminal responsibility, securing funding for a new YMCA in Edenwald, reforming discovery laws, advancing police accountability legislation, and passing early voting expansions.

Education

Heastie earned a Bachelor of Science in applied mathematics and statistics from Stony Brook University in 1990 and a Master of Business Administration in finance from Baruch College in 2007. A product of New York City public schools, he advocates for increased education funding.
