Biography

Carey Hamilton

Carey Hamilton is a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives representing District 87, which encompasses portions of Indianapolis's northside and Marion County. Since her initial election in 2016, she has become a prominent figure in Indiana's state legislature, currently serving as Democratic Caucus Chair in the Indiana House.

Hamilton's career has been defined by environmental advocacy and sustainability work. Prior to her election to the state house, she owned an environmental consulting firm and held several key positions in environmental management and sustainability initiatives. Her professional background includes serving as a program manager for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and as the first leader of Indiana's Greening the Government Program.

Education

Hamilton is a graduate of Pike High School in Indianapolis and holds a bachelor's degree from Indiana University-Bloomington. She has completed advanced leadership training through the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Program and the Institute for Conservation Leadership's Executive Leadership Program . She was recognized as one of the Indianapolis Business Journal's "Forty Under 40" up-and-coming leaders.

Political Experience and Positions

Hamilton serves on several important legislative committees, including the House Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications; Roads and Transportation; and the Statutory Committee on Ethics. She is also a member of the EV Product Commission.

Her most notable legislative achievement is founding and co-chairing the bipartisan Indiana Legislative Trails Caucus in 2020. Through this initiative, the caucus has successfully secured $90 million for trails infrastructure across Indiana during the last two budget cycles—representing the first-ever legislative designation of dedicated state funds toward trails infrastructure.

Beyond the legislature, Hamilton serves on the Hoosier Women Forward Board of Directors and has been involved with numerous civic organizations, including serving as a former board member of Keep America Beautiful and the National Recycling Coalition. She is married to Derek and has two children.
