Candace N. Newell is a Democratic member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing District 99 in Orleans Parish, New Orleans. She assumed office on January 13, 2020, succeeding Jimmy Harris, and was elected in 2019, with eligibility to serve through 2028. As an attorney, she serves on key committees including Commerce, House and Governmental Affairs, Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs, and the House Select Committee on Women and Children. She is also active in the Democratic Caucus, Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus, and Orleans Delegation.

Education and Political Experience

Newell holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master of Science in Criminology , and a Juris Doctor, all from Southern University at New Orleans. Prior to her election, she worked as a legislative aide for Wesley Bishop and as an intern for the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus.
