Biography
Briggs Hopson , born October 10, 1965, is a Republican member of the Mississippi State Senate representing District 23 since 2008. He serves as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and is a partner in the Vicksburg law firm Teller, Hopson & Schrader, LLP, specializing in litigation, business law, school law, and healthcare law. Notable achievements include authoring the Distance Learning Act to provide statewide access to quality teachers via the State Department of Education, as well as leadership roles such as Executive Committee member of the National Conference of State Legislatures , Co-Chair of NCSL's Committee on Law and Criminal Justice, and service on the NCSL Foundation Board of Directors and Southern Regional Education Board Legislative Advisory Council.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a B.B.A. in 1987 and J.D. in 1990 from the University of Mississippi; former Adjunct Professor of Law at Mississippi College School of Law.
- Political Experience: Elected in 2007 with no prior political experience; re-elected multiple times since 2008. Chairs Appropriations Committee; serves on Education, Judiciary, and Public Health committees. Previously a National Uniform Law Commissioner and Chairman of United Way and Good Shepherd Community Center boards in Vicksburg.
