Brian J. Thompson is an American politician from Rhode Island who represents the 20th district in the Rhode Island State Senate. Born around 1981, Thompson is a member of the Democratic Party. He has resided in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, since 2005 and is married to Christine, with whom he has raised six children.

Political Experience

Thompson began his public service career on the Woonsocket City Council, serving a single term after taking office in 2022. His transition to the state legislature came following the retirement announcement of incumbent Roger Picard from the Rhode Island Senate in 2024. Thompson campaigned for the 20th district seat and won the Democratic Party primary, finishing ahead of Denis Collins and Marian Juskuv in a three-way race. He subsequently won the general election unopposed.

In the Rhode Island State Senate, Thompson serves on four committees: Finance, Health and Human Services, Labor, and Labor and Gaming, where he holds the position of Secretary on the Labor and Labor and Gaming committees.

Education and Background

Prior to his political career, Thompson worked as a construction foreman, which shaped his professional background before entering public service.
