Biography
Brian Kemp is a Republican serving as the 83rd Governor of Georgia, with no specific legislative district as governors represent the entire state. A native of Athens, Georgia, he is a husband, father, and successful entrepreneur who started his first business, Kemp Development and Construction Company, over 35 years ago using a pickup truck and a shovel. His ventures expanded into banking, farming, timber, manufacturing, and real estate. Notable achievements include reopening Georgia's economy first during the COVID-19 pandemic, recruiting the three largest economic development projects in state history outside Metro Atlanta, achieving record-low unemployment and more jobs than ever, and being named the #1 state for business for multiple consecutive years. He has championed tax cuts, teacher pay raises, anti-crime and anti-trafficking legislation, and education reforms prioritizing students and parents.
Education and Political Experience
Kemp graduated from the University of Georgia with a major in Agriculture.
His political career began with election to the Georgia State Senate in 2002, where he fought to cut fees, taxes, and mandates. Appointed Georgia's 27th Secretary of State in 2010, he served until 2018, streamlining government processes, reducing red tape, and improving voter registration and business licensing. Elected Governor on November 6, 2018, and sworn in on January 14, 2019, he was re-elected for a second term on November 8, 2022.
