Brian Fernandez

Brian S. Fernandez is a Democratic state senator representing Arizona's 23rd Legislative District. A sixth-generation Arizonan from Yuma, Fernandez's family history in the state dates back to the Gadsden Purchase. He was born and raised in Yuma, where he developed a commitment to serving rural communities and ensuring economic opportunity for working families.

Education

Fernandez graduated from Yuma High School and earned a Bachelor's degree from Arizona State University.

Political Experience

Fernandez began his legislative career in 2021 as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing the 4th legislative district. He later transitioned to the State Senate, running unopposed in the primary and winning the general election by over 7 points against Republican candidate Gary Snyder.

As a state senator, Fernandez has focused on strengthening public schools, expanding affordable housing, and supporting working families. His legislative priorities include securing funding for rural schools and expanding vocational training programs, bringing resources to underserved areas through broadband and infrastructure investments, lowering housing costs, and developing sustainable water policy for Arizona's future.

Fernandez serves on several key committees: the Committee on Appropriations, the Committee on Environment, the Committee on Finance, the Committee on Natural Resources and Water, and the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. Governor Katie Hobbs appointed him to the Governor's Independent Prison Oversight Commission.

Prior to his legislative career, Fernandez volunteered for several political campaigns, including those of former Governor Janet Napolitano and U.S. Representatives Ruben Gallego and Ed Pastor. He also founded a software startup called Team Start, which operates in Arizona and Mexico City.
