Biography
Brenna Bird
Brenna Bird was born in 1976 and is an American lawyer and politician who has served as Iowa Attorney General since January 2023. She is a member of the Republican Party. Born and raised on an Iowa farm where she was homeschooled, Bird made history by becoming the first Republican to hold the office of Iowa Attorney General since 1979, when she defeated longtime incumbent Tom Miller in the November 2022 general election.
Education
Bird earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University. She went on to receive her Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School, where she served as symposium editor of the school's law journal. During her time in Chicago, she also helped entrepreneurs on the South Side start their own businesses.
Political Experience
Before becoming Attorney General, Bird built an extensive career in public service and law:
- Worked as counsel to Governor Terry Branstad and in the Iowa Governor's Office
- Served on the staff of U.S. Congressman Steve King
- Worked in the private practice of law
- Taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law
- Served as a prosecutor for six years, first as Fremont County Attorney and then as Guthrie County Attorney from 2018 to 2022
- Was elected by fellow county attorneys to leadership roles within the Iowa County Attorney Association, most recently serving as the Association's President
