Biography

Biography

Roberto “Bobby” Jesse Gonzales is a Democratic politician and public servant from New Mexico. Born in 1951 in Taos, New Mexico, Gonzales has spent much of his career dedicated to education and civic service in northern New Mexico. He currently represents Senate District 6 in the New Mexico State Senate, a district encompassing Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and Taos counties. Gonzales is widely known for his long-standing commitment to his constituents, his work on education and fiscal issues, and his role in state legislative leadership.

Education

Gonzales earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico and later completed a Master of Arts degree at New Mexico Highlands University. His background in education informed his early career and continued to shape his approach to public policy during his legislative service.

Political Experience

Gonzales began his legislative career when he was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives for District 42 in 1995, serving continuously until 2019. During his tenure in the House, he held several leadership and committee roles, including serving as a member of the Appropriations & Finance Committee and its related panels, as well as on committees addressing taxation, revenue, agriculture, and water resources. He also chaired the Printing & Supplies Committee and served on the Legislative Finance Committee and the Legislative Council.

After the passing of longtime Senator Carlos Cisneros, Gonzales was appointed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in December 2019 to fill the vacant State Senate District 6 seat. He subsequently won election to continue serving in the Senate, where he has been a member of key committees such as the Finance Committee, the Legislative Finance Committee, and the Radioactive & Hazardous Materials Committee. In the Senate, he has continued to focus on fiscal responsibility, education, and issues affecting rural and northern New Mexico communities, including economic development, natural resources, and public safety.
