Biography

Bob Marshall is a Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives representing District 43, which covers most of Highlands Ranch in Douglas County. Elected in 2022 by defeating incumbent Republican Kurt Huffman, he became the first Democrat to represent the district and the first elected from Douglas County since 1966; he was re-elected in 2024. A former Republican for 30 years who left the GOP in 2017 over support for Roy Moore and became a "never Trumper," Marshall is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel with service in Iraq and Afghanistan. His priorities include public safety, education, the environment, veteran issues, countering crime, teacher pay, and good governance; he serves on the Finance, Judiciary, and Business Affairs & Labor committees and has sponsored electoral reform bills while suing the legislature over Sunshine law violations.

  • Education: Georgetown University ; Cornell Law School ; University of San Diego School of Law .
  • Military and Professional Experience: Joined the Marine Corps after Georgetown; served six years active duty, including as Senior Defense Counsel and Station Judge Advocate in Japan; clerked for Judge Eugene Siler on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; mobilized for Iraq and Afghanistan; worked at Wounded Warrior Battalion on disability law; practiced tax litigation for the IRS.
  • Political Experience: Returned to Colorado during COVID, led community accountability efforts against local GOP government; switched to Democrats in 2021, named "Democrat of the Year" in 2022; assumed office January 2023.
