Biography
Representative Blake Johnson
Robert "Blake" Johnson is a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives, representing District 100 in Central Indiana, which includes portions of Marion County. He was selected to fill a vacancy in this district on June 27, 2020, and continues to serve in this role.
Johnson is married to Natalie and resides in Indianapolis. Beyond his legislative work, he serves as interim CEO of The Parks Alliance of Indianapolis, a nonprofit focused on strengthening the city's network of parks, trails, and waterways. He also owns a small strategic consulting firm specializing in communications and content strategy.
Education
Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communication from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. He later completed a Master of Arts in Teaching/Education from Marian University in Indianapolis.
Political Experience
Early Career
Johnson began his career in public service through Teach for America , where he taught English Language Arts and leadership development. He subsequently worked as Communications Director for the Marian County Democratic Party and served as Communications Advisor and Speechwriter for a State Senate campaign.
From 2011 to 2013, Johnson served as Communications Director and Senior Advisor to U.S. Congressman Andre Carson. He then worked as Associate Director and later Communications Director for Complete College America, a national nonprofit, from 2013 to 2018.
Indianapolis City-County Council
Before his election to the State House, Johnson served as a member of the Indianapolis City-County Council representing District 12 . During this tenure, he served as Chairman of the Administration and Finance Committee, which oversees the city's $1 billion annual budget. He spearheaded more than $1 billion in capital investment across his district and was selected by Mayor Joe Hogsett to help lead an education task force that produced the city's Indy Achieves Scholarship Program.
Indiana House of Representatives
As a state legislator, Johnson serves as Ranking Democrat on both the Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee and the Local Government Committee. He is also a member of the Public Policy Committee and the Committee on Joint Rules.
His legislative focus has centered on supporting transit, increasing educational attainment, and pursuing talent initiatives. He has championed efforts to strengthen housing policy reporting requirements, presenting amendments that were unanimously adopted by the Indiana House.
