Biography
William W. "Bill" O'Brien is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 54 since January 2013. He serves as Deputy Majority Leader and holds key committee roles, including First Vice Chair of the Corporations and Rules Committees, chair of the Permanent Joint Committee on State Lottery, and member of the Finance Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated with honors from North Providence High School ; BS in Mathematics, Rhode Island College . Attended Providence College, University of Rhode Island, and Florida International University.
- Professional Experience: Mathematics teacher at Hope High School ; Peace Corps member ; former coach, North Providence Jets Football.
- Notable Achievements: Sponsored 2025 laws allowing retired teachers to substitute up to 180 days to address shortages and requiring opioid antagonist training for public beach lifeguards and rangers. Instrumental in restoring education aid cuts via FY25 budget Article 8. Reintroduced legislation to arm campus police at public colleges.
