Biography

Bill Gustoff is a Republican representative for Iowa House District 40, which includes parts of northeast Des Moines in Polk County, such as Altoona, Saylorville, a small portion of Ankeny, and unincorporated areas of Saylor and Delaware Townships. Born in 1968 in Independence, Iowa, he has served since January 9, 2023, following his 2022 election to the open seat. An attorney by profession, Gustoff is president of the legal division for a national charitable estate planning firm and practices with Hagenow Gustoff & Karas LLP in Des Moines. He lives in Saylor Township with his wife Sara, to whom he has been married for over 30 years, and their four children. Notable positions include chair of the Ethics Committee, and service on Public Safety, Judiciary, Ways and Means, and RIIF Budget Subcommittee. He endorsed Ron DeSantis for president in 2023 and won the 2024 Republican primary unopposed, facing Democrat Heather Sievers in the general election.
