Biography

Bill Ferguson represents Maryland's 46th Legislative District in Baltimore City, encompassing neighborhoods in south Baltimore, downtown near the Inner Harbor, and southeast Baltimore. He has served as President of the Maryland Senate since January 8, 2020, making him the second youngest Senate President in state history and the youngest state senator ever elected in Maryland. Notable achievements include passage of the 21st Century Schools Act , which invested $1 billion in Baltimore City school construction; leadership on the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future; historic police reform; investments in Historically Black Colleges and Universities; and over $1 billion in COVID-19 economic stimulus. He specializes in education policy and the state budget, previously serving as Vice-Chair of the Budget and Taxation Committee.

Education and Political Experience

Born April 15, 1983, in Silver Spring, Maryland, Ferguson graduated from Davidson College, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland School of Law. He began as a history teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools through Teach For America, later working in Baltimore City government as a part-time community liaison. Elected in 2010 after defeating a 27-year incumbent in the Democratic primary, he joined the Senate in 2011 and is currently in his third term. He is married to Lea Ferguson with two children, Caleb and Cora, and resides in Patterson Park.
