Biography
Bill Cunningham is a Democratic State Senator representing Illinois' 18th District since January 2013. Born July 21, 1967, he is a lifelong resident of the district, which spans parts of Chicago's Southwest Side, Southwest Suburbs of Cook County, and areas including Alsip, Chicago Ridge, Evergreen Park, Merrionette Park, Oak Lawn, Orland Park, Palos Heights, Palos Hills, Palos Park, Willow Springs, and Worth. He currently serves as President Pro Tempore of the Illinois Senate. Notable achievements include leading legislation for Chicago's emergency vehicle modernization, property tax relief for seniors, and an energy relief package projected to save households over $13 billion. He resides in Chicago's Beverly community with his wife Juliana and daughters Madeline and Olivia.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduate of Mt. Carmel High School; B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois-Chicago.
- Early Career: 20-year career in the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, serving as Director of Communications under Sheriff Mike Sheahan and Chief of Staff to Sheriff Tom Dart, where he managed efforts against wrongful evictions during the mortgage crisis and advocated for longer sentences for inmates harming jail staff.
- Community Involvement: Served as an elected member and parent representative on the Sutherland Local School Council, securing new revenue amid budget shortfalls and combating fraudulent enrollment; coached youth soccer and volunteered for charities.
- Political Roles: Illinois State Representative for District 35 ; Illinois State Senator for District 18 ; Assistant Democratic Leader/President Pro Tempore .
