Betsy Coffia

Betsy Coffia is an American politician serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 103rd district. Born on September 7, 1977, in Valparaiso, Indiana, she currently resides in Traverse City, Michigan. She is a member of the Democratic Party and represents constituents across parts of Benzie and Grand Traverse Counties and all of Leelanau County—comprising approximately 93,426 residents across multiple townships.

Before her election to the state house, Coffia served on the Grand Traverse County Commission from 2019 to 2023. In her professional background, she has worked as a writer, editor, social worker, and former news editor.

Education

Coffia holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Ferris State University and attended Northwestern Michigan College.

Political Experience

Coffia was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2022, defeating Republican Jack O'Malley in the newly redrawn 103rd district. She assumed office on January 1, 2023.

She successfully won reelection in 2024, earning renomination in the Democratic primary with endorsements from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and EMILY's List. She defeated Republican challenger Lisa Trombley in the general election.

In the legislature, Coffia has served on several committees, including Agriculture, Economic Development and Small Business, Families Children and Seniors, and Health Policy. She holds the position of Majority Vice Chair of the Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors.

Beyond her legislative work, Coffia has been active in her community as a co-founder of One Billion Rising Traverse City, a member of the American Association of University Women , a Leadership Grand Traverse alumni, a Conflict Resolution Services volunteer mediator, and a Traverse City Area Public Schools volunteer.
