Biography

Betsy B. Carr is a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing District 78, which includes portions of the City of Richmond on both sides of the James River. Elected in 2009 , she has served continuously, focusing on education, healthcare, environmental preservation, and public policy. Notable achievements include serving as Treasurer of the House Democratic Caucus , chairing the Task Force to Commemorate the Centennial Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote, and receiving awards such as the YWCA Outstanding Women Award , Policy Pathways Award , Sierra Club recognition, and Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy honors. She is the first Hollins University graduate elected to the Virginia General Assembly, founded the Micah Initiative partnering faith communities with schools, and her photographs from Mali, Africa, are exhibited at Virginia Union University’s Wilder Museum. An Episcopalian, she has three sons and six grandchildren.
