Biography

Beth Bernstein is a Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 78 in Richland County. First elected in November 2012 and re-elected multiple times through 2024, she is an attorney and partner at Bernstein & Bernstein LLC, specializing in residential real estate, probate administration, and civil litigation. Admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1994, she has also been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Court for South Carolina. Born November 13 in Columbia, daughter of the late Carol and Isadore Bernstein, she is married to Knowlton "Rip" Sanders.

Notable achievements include serving as Chairwoman of the SC General Assembly Women's Caucus, Vice Chair of the Richland County Legislative Delegation, Secretary of the House Ethics Committee, and previously as Chair of the Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children. She chairs the House Judiciary Committee's Family, Business, and Probate Laws Subcommittee—the only female and Democrat in that role. Awards include the Conservation Voters of South Carolina Green Tie Award, Girl Scouts’ Women of Distinction, Child Advocate Award from the SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, SmokeFreeSC Legislator of the Year, Barbara Moxon Advocacy Award for women’s issues, Legacy of Caring from USC College of Nursing, Sierra Club Legislator of the Year, and John W. Williams Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the Richland County Bar Association.
