Biography
Bert Gurr is a Republican member of the Nevada State Assembly representing District 33, which covers a large portion of rural eastern Nevada, including parts of Elko, Eureka, and Nye counties, and all of Lincoln and White Pine counties. Born in 1948 in Roosevelt, Utah, he moved to Elko, Nevada, as an infant and has lived there since. A small business owner and real estate broker, Gurr was first elected in 2022, succeeding term-limited Republican John Ellison, and won re-election candidacy announcement in 2025 after defeating Democrat John Garrard with 81% of the vote. He serves on the Government Affairs, Growth and Infrastructure, and Natural Resources committees. Notable achievements include sponsoring Assembly Bill 133, which reformed county treasurer operations by extending hours to 5 p.m. and allocating unclaimed tax funds for technology upgrades, supporting local government, small business, and public safety.
Education and Political Experience
Gurr attended Elko public schools and briefly enrolled at Utah State University before leaving to return to Elko. His early career involved jobs as a hunting guide, firefighter, and surveyor's assistant, and he served on the committee that built the South Fork Dam. From the 1970s, he worked in real estate development, becoming a project manager for Spring Creek and obtaining his broker's license in 1979 to open his own brokerage with his wife, Lee Rix Gurr. Politically, he held roles in state and local real estate associations and served on boards including Elko Project Head Start, Elko County Sportsmen’s Association, and Elko County’s Game Management Board before entering elected office in 2022. He has served two regular sessions and two special sessions as of 2025.
