Barry Dean Knight was a Republican politician and farmer who represented Virginia House District 98, encompassing parts of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Elected in a special election on January 6, 2009, he served for 17 years until his death at age 71 after a battle with kidney cancer diagnosed in 2024. Known as a full-time farmer turned citizen legislator, Knight was praised for his bipartisan approach, budget expertise as chair of the appropriations committee, and advocacy for Virginia's agribusiness community.

Education and Political Experience

Knight lacked a formal higher education degree but built a successful career in agriculture, starting his first farm at age 26 on 640 acres, producing nearly 25,000 hogs annually before exiting the hog business. He earned accolades including Virginia Farm Bureau's Young Farmer of the Year in 1983 and served as president of Tidewater Pork Producers , chairman of Southern States Cooperative, and on the Virginia Beach Farm Bureau and state boards under two governors.

Before the House of Delegates, he served on the Virginia Beach Planning Commission, including as chairperson. In the General Assembly, Knight was noted for service on committees like general laws, transportation, and appropriations, with a reputation for thoughtful, cross-aisle collaboration.
