Barbara Reich Freiberg

Barbara Reich Freiberg is a retired educator and Republican member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing District 70 since 2020. She was born and raised in Baton Rouge and has devoted much of her career to education and public service in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Education

Freiberg graduated from Lee High School in Baton Rouge and earned her B.A. in Education from Louisiana Tech University. She later completed her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Political Experience

Freiberg's public service began with her election to the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board in 2010, representing District 7, and she was re-elected in 2014. During her tenure on the school board, she served as President and led efforts to expand educational choices through charter school approvals, implement fiscal accountability, and oversee the redesign of Lee High School.

In 2016, she was elected to the Metro Council in Baton Rouge, representing District 12 until her election to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2019. She took office in 2020 and is eligible to serve through the 2028 term.

Notable Positions and Achievements

Throughout her career, Freiberg has held leadership roles including Vice Chair of Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs and positions on several key committees including Appropriations, Education, and the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget. She is a former State President of the Louisiana Council of Teachers of English and has received recognition including the LSU College of Education Outstanding Teacher Award and Business Week's Award for Innovative Teaching. She serves as an active member of the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus and the Capital Region Legislative Delegation.
