Biography
Balvir Singh
*Assembly Member, New Jersey Legislative District 7 *
Balvir Singh is a public school educator and mathematician who represents the 7th Legislative District in Burlington County, serving alongside Assemblywoman Carol Murphy. He made history as the first Sikh to be sworn in as a member of the New Jersey Legislature.
Singh spent his early childhood in a small village in Punjab, India before immigrating to the United States with his family. He settled in Burlington City, where he developed deep roots in the community. Described as a lifelong champion of resilience and opportunity, Singh is committed to ensuring the voices of everyday people are heard in state government. Beyond his political work, he is an avid fan of Philadelphia sports teams and enjoys playing pick-up soccer on the weekends.
Education
Singh earned a BA in Mathematics from The College of New Jersey and an M.Sc. in Mathematics from Rutgers University . He also obtained a supervisory certificate from Rowan University .
Political Experience
Singh brings nearly two decades of experience as a public school educator to his role in the state legislature. He served on the Burlington Township Board of Education from 2015 to 2017 before being elected to the Burlington County Board of Commissioners in 2017, where he served multiple terms.
As a Burlington County Commissioner, Singh focused on affordable housing, economic development, and public health. His notable achievements include distributing over $13 million in rental assistance to residents, launching zero-interest loan programs for businesses, and supporting the construction of a 60-bed emergency shelter for vulnerable county residents.
In the New Jersey General Assembly, Singh serves as Vice Chair of the Science, Innovation & Technology Committee and is a member of the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee and the Appropriations Committee.
