Biography

Ashlei Spivey, a lifelong resident of North Omaha, was elected to the Nebraska Legislature representing District 13 on November 5, 2024. She assumed office on January 8, 2025, succeeding term-limited Senator Justin Wayne. Spivey is a member of the Democratic Party and is the first Black woman to serve in the Nebraska Legislature since 2016.

Prior to her political career, Spivey founded and served as the executive director of I Be Black Girl, an Omaha-based nonprofit advocating for Black women and families. The organization focuses on reproductive justice, including abortion access, extended postpartum care, food security, affordable childcare, and natural hair protections.

In 2024, Spivey was honored as one of USA Today's Women of the Year for her work empowering Black mothers.
