Biography
Arthur Orr
Arthur Orr is an American politician and businessman serving in the Alabama State Senate representing District 3. Born May 25, 1964, in Danville, Alabama, Orr is a sixth-generation Alabamian who grew up next to the Alabama Sheriff's Boys Ranch.
After graduating from law school, Orr pursued public service through the Peace Corps, serving in a remote Himalayan village in Nepal where he taught in the village school and conducted teacher training. Following his Peace Corps commitment, he returned to Decatur and practiced law as a partner in the law firm Harris, Caddell and Shanks, P.C. He later worked with Habitat for Humanity International as a developer, establishing a new Habitat program in Bangladesh that has constructed more than 1,000 houses.
Orr was selected as Citizen of the Year by the Decatur Rotary Club and carried the 1996 Olympic Torch in Morgan County as a Community Hero.
Education
Orr holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law. He is also a graduate of Leadership Alabama.
Political Experience
Party and District: Orr is a Republican representing Alabama State Senate District 3, which encompasses Morgan County and portions of Madison and Limestone counties.
Legislative Service: First elected in 2006 at age 42, Orr has served continuously without opposition and is now in his fifth term. He chairs the Finance and Taxation Education Committee and previously chaired the Finance and Taxation General Fund Committee.
Notable Achievements: Orr has sponsored and passed legislation addressing high school student dropout rates, making the state's checkbook publicly available online, improving campaign finance reporting, removing racist language from the state constitution, and supporting volunteer firefighters and free medical clinics. He was instrumental in creating the Robotics Technology Park in Limestone County, the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in Madison County, and the Alabama Center for the Arts in Morgan County. He has participated in business recruitment efforts that brought billions in economic investment and thousands of jobs to his district.
Outside Employment: Orr serves as Executive Vice President for Cook's Pest Control.
