Biography

April Berg is a Democratic state representative for Washington's 44th Legislative District, Position 2, making her the first Black woman to represent the district. Raised on the Southside of Chicago, she moved to the Northwest seeking opportunity and has lived in Snohomish County for over 20 years with her family; her children have attended local schools including Jackson High School in the Everett School District and the University of Washington. Her career includes work as a Boeing program manager, owner of The Edmonds Inn bed and breakfast, and roles promoting equity, inclusion, and community growth in education, planning, and business. She currently serves as Chair of the House Finance Committee, and as a member of the Appropriations Committee and the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Committee .

Education and Political Experience

  • Elected the first Black and youngest student body president in Oregon State University history.
  • Appointed by Oregon’s Governor as student representative to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education.
  • Served on the Edmonds and Everett School Boards, where she increased teaching budgets, updated textbooks and technology, built vocational partnerships, and supported families during school closures.
  • Served as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Mill Creek, focusing on business support, transit, growth, and housing.
  • Elected to the Washington State House of Representatives for District 44 in 2020, reflecting her commitment to public schools, small business, and aerospace.
