Biography
Antoinette Sedillo Lopez is a Democratic State Senator representing District 16 in the New Mexico Senate since her appointment in January 2019.
Antoinette Sedillo Lopez, a native New Mexican raised in the farming village of Los Chavez, is a longtime community leader focused on social, economic, environmental, civil rights, and domestic violence issues. She was appointed to the Senate seat after Senator Cisco McSorley resigned, selected by the Bernalillo County Commission and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham; she won re-election in 2020 with 78% of the vote, becoming the first woman and first Hispanic to represent District 16. Notable achievements include serving as executive director of Enlace Comunitario , championing climate and environmental legislation as Vice Chair of the Senate Conservation Committee, and holding committee roles in Courts, Corrections & Justice; Legislative Health and Human Services; Water and Natural Resources; Investment, Pensions and Oversight; Legislative Council; and Senate Health & Public Affairs. She ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in New Mexico's 1st District in 2017.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended University of New Mexico for undergraduate studies ; UCLA School of Law ; clerked for the District of Columbia Circuit Court; joined UNM School of Law faculty in 1986 as the first Latina to earn tenure there; served 25+ years as professor , Director of clinical programs , and Associate Dean; retired in 2014.
- Political Experience: Directed Clinton-Gore re-election campaign in New Mexico ; recruited for congressional run ; appointed NM State Senator ; re-elected ; occupation listed as retired law professor.
