Biography
Anthony G. Brown
Anthony Gregory Brown was born on November 21, 1961, in Huntington, New York, to immigrant parents. He is a trailblazer who became the first African American elected as Maryland's Attorney General, assuming office on January 3, 2023. Brown is a member of the Democratic Party and is a retired colonel in the United States Army Reserve.
Education
Brown graduated from Harvard College in 1984 with an A.B. degree. He later attended Harvard Law School, and between his undergraduate and law school studies, he served on active duty in the U.S. Army as an army aviator.
Political Experience
Brown's political career spans multiple levels of government:
Maryland House of Delegates : Represented Prince George's County's District 25, serving as Majority Whip from 2004–2007 and Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee from 2003–2004.
Lieutenant Governor of Maryland : Elected in 2006 on the Democratic ticket with Governor Martin O'Malley and re-elected in 2010, serving two four-year terms.
U.S. House of Representatives : Represented Maryland's 4th Congressional District, serving on the Committee for Armed Services, Committee on Ethics, Committee on Natural Resources, and Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure.
Attorney General of Maryland : Elected in November 2022 by defeating Republican Michael Peroutka with nearly 60 percent of the vote, making him Maryland's first Black attorney general.
Notable Achievements
As Attorney General, Brown has established the Office of Equity, Policy, and Engagement and created a Civil Rights Division to address systemic inequality. He expanded the authority of the Independent Investigations Division to prosecute police-involved fatalities and successfully advocated for legislation establishing a permanent Commission on Hate Crimes Response and Prevention in 2023. In his early life, he became the first African American elected president of Huntington High School's student body.
