Biography
Anquam Mahamoud is an American politician representing District 62B of the Minnesota House of Representatives, which includes the Phillips and Powderhorn neighborhoods in South Minneapolis. She is a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and is currently serving her first term, having been elected in 2024.
Mahamoud was born in San Diego, California and moved to Minneapolis with her family in 1998 at age 8. She grew up in the East Phillips neighborhood and experienced poverty during her childhood, with her single mother working to provide for her and her siblings.
Education
Mahamoud earned a B.S. in Psychology from Saint Catherine University in Saint Paul in 2012.
Political Experience
Prior to her election to the Minnesota House, Mahamoud held several significant positions in healthcare and policy:
- She was among the first state caseworkers hired during the Affordable Care Act rollout
- She served as State Planning Director for Individual Market Policy, Eligibility and Enrollment for MNsure, where she led strategic efforts, communications, and budget creation in the tens of millions of dollars to ensure quality and affordability in the healthcare marketplace across Minnesota
- She worked as a Chief Operating Officer of Twin Cities Health Services, providing substance abuse treatment and mental health services to vulnerable and unhoused populations
During her career at MNsure, she was a member of AFSCME and MAPE labor unions.
In the 2024 general election, Mahamoud won her seat decisively, defeating Republican candidate Bob Sullentrop by nearly 75 percentage points. She had previously received the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party's endorsement in a competitive field.
