Biography
Anna Marie Caballero is a Democrat serving in the California State Senate District 14, which covers parts of Merced, Madera, and Fresno Counties in the Central Valley. A trailblazer and moderate Democrat, she previously served in the California State Assembly , was the first woman elected Mayor of Salinas in 1998, and the first Latina to represent her Assembly and Senate districts. Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2011, she led the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency, overseeing 16,000 employees and a $27 billion budget focused on civil rights, consumer protections, and professional licensing. Notable achievements include authoring SB 6 ** for affordable housing, **SB 490 for student access to California produce, SB/AB 112 for rural hospital support, SB 1142 for reproductive health access, and climate bills SB 306 and SB 905. She chairs the Budget Subcommittee on State Administration and serves on committees for Agriculture, Banking, Housing, and Judiciary. Married to Juan Uranga with three children and six grandchildren, she previously directed Partners for Peace, a nonprofit combating gang violence through education and family services.
