Biography
Anita Bonds is a Democratic at-large member of the Council of the District of Columbia, representing the entire city. Born in 1945, she has dedicated her career to public service, civil rights, social justice, and housing equity as a grassroots organizer and activist. She chairs the Committee on Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization, focusing on affordable housing, tenant rights, homeownership, and preventing displacement of longtime residents. Notable achievements include authoring or co-authoring over 150 pieces of legislation, such as the Eviction Records Sealing Act, and directing hundreds of millions in funding to public programs. She has served on cabinets of Mayors Anthony Williams, Sharon Pratt, and Marion Barry, and held roles in organizations like Young Democrats of America, D.C. Women’s Political Caucus, and Africare.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended University of California, Berkeley, earning a BS; actively involved in the Free Speech Movement.
- Political Experience: Chair of the DC Democratic State Committee ; member of National Conference of State Legislatures’ Task Force on State and Local Taxation, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and board member of Democratic Municipal Officials. Elected at-large councilmember since 2012 ; previously executive at Fort Myer Construction. Mother of three and lifelong Washingtonian.
