Angus Stanley King Jr. is an American lawyer and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Maine since 2013. He is a political independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party for committee assignments, making him one of two independents in the Senate alongside Bernie Sanders of Vermont. King represents the entire state of Maine as its at-large senator and was reelected in 2018 and 2024.

Prior to the Senate, he served two terms as the 72nd Governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003, elected as an independent in 1994 and reelected in 1998 by one of the largest margins in state history. As governor and senator, he has focused on bipartisan consensus-building, national security, intelligence oversight, economic development, education reform, mental health, environmental protection, energy conservation, opioid crisis response, veterans' support, and rural broadband access. Notable achievements include leading the Student Loan Certainty Act of 2013, which averted student loan interest rate hikes and saved over $50 billion; rebuilding Maine's mental health and corrections systems; laptop programs for middle school students; and major land conservation efforts.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1966 and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1969.

  • Early Career: Began as a staff attorney for Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Skowhegan, Maine; served as chief legal counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics ; practiced law privately; worked in renewable energy, founding Northeast Energy Management, Inc. in 1989 for energy conservation projects; hosted the public TV show Maine Watch.
